Dale Grooms hosted the 21st annual Fall Field Day at Glen-Dale Park near Peebles Ohio over
the first weekend in October as usual. Dale created the facility years ago and named the park combining the name of his late wife Glenna along with his own name.
I arrived early and took the time to make a run over to Miller's Amish Bakery on Friday morning. This was my first time back after missing a few years due to
other committments and I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with old friends and make some new friends at the same time. We were lucky as hurricane
Ian was on it's northerly swing on Saturday morning, but the rain stayed just to the east of where we were. The skies were overcast on Saturday and on Sunday morning
and there were a few very light sprinkles off and on through the day on Saturday. We expected the forecasted wet weather to affect the turnout, but there were plenty
of teams on hand to entertain the hardy spectators who did come out. The real surprise was that there were several teams of Suffolk draft horses on hand. It is very
unusual to have more of them than any other draft breed at an event. The food for the event was provided by the Christian Missonary Fellowship group who uses this event
as a fundraiser to support their endeavors. They provided everything from breakfast thru supper both Saturday and Sunday along with providing a church service on Sunday
morning. Dale had opened the event up to non-horse folks who might wish to come and display their antique tractors which also generated a lot of additional interest.
Overall, it was a fun weekend with a lot of different activities. Dale just turned 86 years old and has had 4 hip replacements, but he says we will be there again next
year if the good Lord is willing. I hope he gets his wish.
