2015 SIDHMA Club Ride

The 2015 version of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association annual club wagon ride was a little bit different from prior years. The club decided that this year the ride would not be a "from/to" wagon train as in other years. It was decided to set up camp in two different spots and then ride 15-20 miles each day from those camps. This way, there would be no need to go through the daily process of moving trailers etc. It was decided to spend the first few days of the week at the Southern Indiana Horsemans Club near Tell City, IN and then move across the Ohio River to the farm of Dexter Marsch on the "backside" of Hawesville, Kentucky for the last few days of the week. Another change from the usual schedule was that the ride would not formally begin on Saturday morning as in the past. This was because the daughter of club officers Allan and Lisa Wheatley was being married on Saturday. The wedding and the reception were both scheduled to be held at the same Horsemans Club where we were planning to camp. Since all of us were invited to attend the festivities, it was decided that the first day of riding would be delayed until Sunday morning. I took several photos during the wedding and have placed a link to those photos below.

The weather for this year's ride was almost a carbon copy of last year. It was very dry and the temperatures each day ranged between 55F and 80F degrees which was great for the horses and mules and made for some very comfortable sleeping. We didn't ride on Wednesday this year as it was designated as "Moving Day." After a big breakfast Wednesday morning, we moved our camp from the Horsemans Club over to Dexter's farm in Kentucky. The rest of the day was spent lazing around and allowing the animals to have a day off. As always, our breakfast and dinner meals were enjoyed as a group and prepared by the camp cooks. The menu was well planned and there was more than enough food for everyone, including guests who seemed to show up each day near meal time. I think I gained about 15 pounds in those 8 days! A new "horse racing" game was introduced this year and, along with the nightly cornhole matches, provided everyone with plenty of nightly entertainment. Of all the different groups I get the opportunity to ride with, I have to say that this group is one of my favorites. Everyone is friendly and the friendship and respect that they show to each other and to their guests is a real pleasure to observe. I'm already looking forward to next year when I hope to be able to join them again. I hope you enjoy the photos I took each day showing the participants and some of the things we saw and did along the way.
