On Friday afternoon July 31st, I received a phone call from Eddie Mills to let me know that the members of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule
Association had decided to hold an impromptu wagon ride over the weekend. Since I had no prior plans, I grabbed my cameras, hooked up my travel trailer and headed out to join the fun.
After driving for 3 1/2 hours and 170 miles, I arrived at Danny Sommer's deer camp in the Hoosier National Forest near Tell City, Indiana to find a fairly large group of folks had come out to
enjoy the beautiful evening weather and the last 'blue moon' until January 2018.
Saturday morning we had a great group breakfast and then hooked up the teams. There were 4 wagons on hand along with a couple of outriders. We took a leisurely ride of about 15 miles
and returned back to the camp in mid afternoon. As reflected in the cover photo below, Eddie broke out the horse racing dice/card game that we had learned during the Columbia Mule Days wagon
train back in April. This proved to be a popular game with the entire group and with only a few breaks, it was still going on when your photographer went to bed at about 10PM. During one of
those breaks, it had been arranged for the Derby Tavern to bring in a pulled pork supper with all of the trimmings so no one had to do any cooking. This was followed with the obligatory (for
this group) Cornhole tournament up until dark.
On Sunday, we again had a great group breakfast with bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, eggs, etc. We were joined by 4 additional outriders, but we only had two wagons that had stayed to ride.
It was decided that we would just take a brief 3 hour ride to one of the nearby camp grounds in the National Forest. After taking a nice long break to do some socializing, we returned to camp
around noon. Overall, it was a great weekend. As is always the case with this club, even if members weren't able to join the ride, many of them showed up in the evenings to enjoy some fellowship.
This is one of the things that I really like whenever I am able to join this group for an event.
