2008 Clark County Ky

Old Fashioned Farm Days

On Sunday August 3, 2008, the Eastern Kentucky Draft Horse and Mule Association, in conjunction with the Clark County Fair, held their 2nd Annual Old Fashioned Farm Day at the fairgrounds in Winchester, Kentucky.  Several local draft horse owners were on hand to enjoy a day of old-time, "down home" competitions.  These events were meant to simulate some of the activities that used to regularly take place on farms all over the country.  The following is a list of the events with their descriptions.  Click on the event title to see photos from that event:

Event 1 - Log Skidding - This simulates moving logs out of the woods and positioning them where they can be ready to go to the sawmill.  This job calls for precision as the logs must be maneuvered around the trees (cones)  and carefully placed where the loader can easily get to them, all the while being careful to not get  injured by the log rolling around underfoot.

Event 2 - Obstacle Course - This event allows the driver to demonstrate how well he and his team work together as they weave thru the trees (cones), back into the barn (more cones), and parallel park (even more cones), all while on the stopwatch.

Event 3 - Farm Chores/Feed Team Race - Every farm youngster loves to go to town on Friday night with their friends, but the chores must be done first.  This means feeding all of the livestock.  This event gives the "youngster" the opportunity to show just how fast he can get the cattle and the hogs fed and then get some hay to the horses.  Again, this is a timed event.

Event 4 - Farm Horse Pull  - Probably one the most popular draft horse events, the horse pull allows the farmer to show just how well trained and how strong his team of horses are.  This is where the "rubber meets the road."  The bragging is over and it's time to "put up or shut up."  Whoever pulls the biggest load the required distance is the winner and gets bragging rights until next time!
