The folks in historic Bardstown, Kentucky extended an invitation to anyone interested in performing field work with animals to come to the historic Wickland Estate on Saturday, April 12th. The goal was to help prepare the fields that the local FFA group would be using for one of their projects. The days leading up to the event were filled with rain all around the area, but the fields to be worked were spared from the deluge. However, this may have kept some participants away. As it was, there was a team of oxen, two teams of draft horses, and several mule teams on hand to provide the numerous spectators with what, to many of them, was a very unique opportunity to see the way that their ancestors worked their fields. The day turned overcast with a cold, cutting wind, but all in all, there was a lot of fun and camaraderie with everyone having a good time and making some new friends.
This was the first time that many of the participants and spectators had the opportunity to see a team of oxen actually at work plowing. They did this all day long!
